Vivaldi forum tips

A few insights concerning hidden features on our forum. Presented and written down for an imaginary readership (this is you).

Setting a forum signature

Contrary to popular belief, everyone can set a forum sig. This isn’t yet possible from the ordinary settings page, but we can access the hidden nodeBB edit-page to create a signature.

Replace ‘username’ with your actual username, but make sure it is written in lowercase only. A more direct way of accomplishing this is visiting your own profile and adding “/edit” to the end of the url. As a bonus, we are also able to set a location and a short ‘about me’.

Bookmarking posts

Bookmarking is a standard nodeBB feature, which is currently dysfunctional on Vivaldi forum. Well, it’s not really dysfunctional, since we can bookmark pages, but we aren’t able to access the very page, which hosts this collection and provides an overview for easy access, because the according link on our profiles leads nowhere. This is the correct link:

Again, username lowercase only. And before I forget it, we can bookmark pages by clicking the menu icon on the bottom right of any post. In your case you will see  3 vertical dots instead of the hamburger menu. Just hit ‘Bookmark’ and a direct link to the chosen post will be saved unto the bookmarks page.

Vote it (whodid?)

Voting is a controversial topic on the forums. Many users preferred the old system — a simple “Thank You” button and nothing more, used to thank an individual for providing a helpful insight or solution to an actual problem. Nowadays we enjoy reddit-like up- and downvoting. The buttons are used far more casually and maybe that’s the way it should be. Still, some users get really annoyed when they are downvoted, and are enraged as if someone had physically attacked them. If this description fits you — good news! Henceforth thou shalt be able to focus thine hatred on the enemy directly. Simply click (not hover!) the number between the upvote and downvote buttons and a popup will appear, listing all users who voted on the post. And to prevent accidental up/downvoting, following advice: To take an up- or downvote back, you have to click the same button again. Downvoting a post you upvoted previously, will result in a downvote (it’s not a plus/minus system).

I hope you learned something new, if not, kudos to you, you’re clearly a forum veteran!! No users were harmed during the creation of these screenshots, I took the downvote back after taking the image, of fear the wrath of the Voting Gods would crush me.
